3. Applying

This uses the start of the ‘Making Links’ ladder in SECRET.  It is the skill of showing that you have not only understood a new piece of information but you have already begun to file it away by connecting it with other knowledge.

A good lesson will always ensure that the knowledge is seen within a bigger picture.  In a Geography lesson I heard a child say “Isn’t this maths?” which demonstrates how compartmentalised much of the knowledge will become unless the teacher actively makes the links clear so that learners can use the knowledge they gain outside of the single lesson in which they learned it.  I myself, can remember being shocked when I realised on a family holiday that French people were speaking French and it wasn’t just something we were learning for Mr Collins!
